How to Send a Parcel Abroad from India: A Step-by-Step Guide
Whether it’s a first care package to a child studying abroad or a routine export shipment, the process is the same seven steps. Here’s how to get it right the first time.
1. Check what you’re actually allowed to send
Every destination country restricts certain items — and India’s own export rules add another layer. Common culprits: batteries, liquids, perishable food and certain electronics. Check both sides before you pack anything you can’t easily replace; our list of items you cannot send internationally is a good start.
2. Weigh and measure the box
Couriers charge on whichever is higher: actual weight or volumetric (dimensional) weight. Get both numbers before you shop for a rate — guessing is the most common reason people overpay.
3. Compare carriers for your specific parcel
No carrier is cheapest for every route and weight. Compare DHL, FedEx, UPS, India Post and SendMyParcel’s own services for your exact destination, weight and urgency rather than defaulting to a familiar name.
4. Pack it properly
Use a rigid outer box, cushion fragile items so nothing shifts, and double-box anything valuable or breakable. A parcel that arrives damaged costs more in time and goodwill than the shipping fee ever saved. See our packaging guide.
5. Declare contents and value honestly
This is the biggest factor in whether a parcel clears customs smoothly. Under-declaring to save on duty is the most common cause of holds, delays and the occasional seized parcel — and it’s usually the recipient who deals with the fallout.
6. Book and choose pickup or drop-off
Once you’ve chosen a carrier and rate, book the shipment. With SendMyParcel you can have the parcel collected from your door or drop it at our office in Mahipalpur, New Delhi, for free. Keep your air waybill or tracking number somewhere you won’t lose it.
7. Track it — and know what to do if customs holds it
Most delays are resolved with a quick document or clarification. Keep your invoice and any supporting paperwork handy in case the destination customs office asks for it. Why shipments get stuck in customs explains the usual reasons.
Doing this once, carefully, beats redoing it after a parcel gets stuck or comes back damaged. Start with a free quote and the rest follows from there.
