Gift Parcel Customs Duty in 2026: What Senders Should Know
Customs treatment of personal gift parcels has been tightening, and the duty-free allowances many families relied on for years can no longer be taken for granted. Changes have often arrived with little notice, which has left senders unsure what applies to the parcel they are packing today.
Most people haven’t stopped sending gifts. What has grown is confusion about the rules — and the fear of a surprise bill landing on a loved one at the other end.
What has changed
- Smaller duty-free allowances. The value a gift can have before duty or tax applies has come down in more than one place, so far more gift parcels now attract a charge.
- Destination countries are tightening too. The USA, for example, has suspended its $800 duty-free (“de minimis”) allowance for imports from every country since 29 August 2025. In the UK, gifts worth more than £39 attract VAT and gifts over £135 can attract customs duty, according to GOV.UK.
- Gifts and commercial shipments are treated differently. Gift rules apply only to genuine personal gifts; anything sold or sent by a business follows separate customs rules.
What this means for you
- Declare accurately. Under-declaring a parcel’s value to stay under an allowance can trigger delays, penalties or seizure — and it is usually the recipient, not the sender, who deals with the fallout.
- Budget for duty on higher-value gifts. If what you are sending is worth more than a token amount, assume duty or tax may apply and factor it into what you send and how you value it on the customs form.
- Check before you ship. Duty depends on the destination country’s rules as well as India’s export declaration. A quick check before you seal the box avoids an unpleasant surprise for the person receiving it.
- Documentation still matters. A clear, honest invoice or gift note reduces the chance of a customs hold-up whatever the value.
The bottom line
This isn’t a reason to stop sending care packages — it’s a reason to send them with your eyes open. Check the shipping price for your parcel below. Our comparison includes DDP (delivered duty paid) services on several routes; if you don’t want the recipient to be asked for money on delivery, ask us how duty is charged on them before you book.
Customs rules change often, so check the destination country’s official guidance before sending a high-value gift.
